ATI XGP

As the COMPUTEX festival in Taipei progresses, new and exciting products are released. It appears to the public that one of the most anticipated ones was the external graphics processor, ATI XGP. As it is clearly said, this can be used in any type of computer, but was especially made for laptops since they lack powerful graphics cards. By having this external graphics processor, now laptop owners are able to view their favorite movies without problems or play games such as BioShock and Oblivion. People could now opt for small light weight laptops that own elegant designs. This is a great advance to the usability of computers and laptops.

It is now officially released by the Canadian company that the processor will boast multi GPU capabilities that will enable the device to run high end Crossfire X technologies. In order to improve performance, the GPU will possess the new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series processor. The Mobility Radeon 3800 series processor is one of the most powerful in ATI’s whole lineup of GPU’s, as it has a 2.25 GHz memory clock speed, 55nm building process, ATI’s reputable Powerplay, and at least one PCI 2.0 support. In 3DMark test scores, the ATI 3800 easily beat the older counterparts from ATI and the GPU’s from Nvidia. This graphics processor is also praised for its low energy consumption, reduced temperature levels, and its low noise level. Since these small areas in the processor are turning into an important factor for customers and gamers, it is important to note the excellence of this processor. By utilizing this, the external GPU hub will certainly succeed in its release. The easiness and the importance of this device was commented by ATI vice president of marketing Mark Skynner, “With ATI XGP Technology, notebooks can switch between everyday computing and hard-core gaming with a simple plug-in that’s also portable enough to bring powerful 3D performance on-the-go.”

The ATI XGP is planned to be connected to the main system through a PCle 2.0 graphics form with a specially designed cable from Japan Aviation Electronics Industry Ltd. It is officially released that the transfer of speeds between the graphics unit and the computer will be of an incredible 4.0 GB per second, enabling a smooth graphics performance. It is clear that suppliers for this device are excited as shown through Mark Saubert, the marketing manager of Japan Electronics Aviation Industry that commented “ATI XGP Technology is cutting edge and we’re excited to participate in this revolutionary solution for notebooks. ATI XGP Technology redefines what mobile graphics is all about.”

Interestingly, this external GPU processor possesses its own set of USB 2.0 connections. Just imagine having a couple of few extra ports for your computer. People with ultraportable or small laptops that have only a few ports could opt for this system as a multimedia power source or simply as a USB hub. For this reason, it is clear that the ATI XGP could bring a new era for the user’s computer environment.

In the past few years, ATI was losing grounds on the laptop graphics card sector to Nvidia. As a result, this response from ATI was an excellent booster product. Currently, demands over powerful GPU’s are growing and laptop graphics card sales had boomed. It’s as if ATI was the perfect timer of products by releasing this device in this strategic time.

Windows 7: Succesor of Windows Vista

When introduced, Windows Vista faced many criticisms about the intense system requirements. These were intense as it only supported computers with at least 1.0 GHz CPU clock speed, 512 megabytes of memory, and 40GB of hard drive space. On the other hand, Windows XP Professional only required 300 MHz of CPU speed, 128 MB of memory, and a 1.5 GB hard drive. Even with the required configurations, customers have complained that the OS requires too much graphic power and causes the computer to run extremely slow. It appears that computers certified as Windows Vista capable cannot even run some of the preinstalled Windows programs such as Windows Moviemaker. Mike Nash, a Microsoft vice president, bought a 2000 dollar system with windows Vista, but later he complained, “I personally got burned. I now have a $2,100 e-mail machine.” For these reasons, many XP users have not upgraded to the newer Vista operating system since they didn’t want to risk their computers. Many have heard unsatisfactory comments about Vista and the fact that the price is higher than usual affected many. This, in result, impacted Microsoft’s gains, causing the company to rank down. By considering this, Microsoft officials sped up and decided to develop a new operating system codenamed as Windows 7.

Currently, there are not many features revealed from Microsoft, but some officials commented on the product. Microsoft chairman and CEO Bill gates emphasized to the press that the new version will be more “user-centric” and commented, “That means that right now when you move from one PC to another, you’ve got to install apps on each one, do upgrades on each one. Moving information between them is very painful. We can use Live Services to know what you’re interested in. So even if you drop by a [public] kiosk or somebody else’s PC, we can bring down your home page, your files, your fonts, your favorites and those things. So that’s kind of the user-centric thing that Live Services can enable. [Also,] in Vista, things got a lot better with [digital] ink and speech, but by the next release there will be a much bigger bet. Students won’t need textbooks; they can just use these tablet devices. Parallel computing is pretty important for the next release. We’ll make it so that a lot of the high-level graphics will be just built into the operating system. So we’ve got a pretty good outline.” Bill Gates also revealed to the press that performance will improve drastically by lowering the RAM usage, and decreasing the power usage. He also commented that this new OS would allow users to have more connection with the mobile phone; therefore allowing the connection between two PC’s and the Internet. This is a significant feature of the upcoming OS and could turn out to be a key selling point since the stress caused by transporting files would be reduced.

In early January 2008, Microsoft revealed a build of Windows 7 named Milestone 1 (m1) with a version number of 6.1.6519.1. According to TG Daily, there are many improvements in this build such as a new Windows Media Center, “support for systems using multiple heterogeneous graphics cards”, new gadgets for Windows Explorer and Windows Media Center, an improved calculator, and a new feature that allows users to store personal Internet Explorer settings in Windows Live accounts. The Health Center of the OS was also modified allowing the users to view all the security concerns of the computer in one place. Other than this, there were no other major updates in this build.

Windows Vista had failed on many consumer’s eyes; therefore Microsoft bumped into the idea of releasing a new operating system. Since many officers are worried, it is projected that Microsoft is going to break the 3 year custom by releasing the OS in late 2009. This may turn out to be a success that leads to many upgrades of current XP users.

Panasonic GPS Strada CN-HX1000D and CN-HW1000D

Matsushita Electric’s most famous brand, Panasonic, recently announced the public of its planned launch of the world’s first HDD car navigation system with linkage between the car and the home. Two of these kinds of GPS would be introduced under the F Class Strada navigation category with the serial numbers of CN-HX1000D and CN-HW1000D. What left many people’s mouth open about this navigation system is the first unique use of the Bluetooth technology to control all the features of the home through the car. By using this, people may leave their doors unlocked, or the electrical appliances on and control everything via the automobile. This system even allows the person to adjust the temperature of the air conditioner, turn the alarm on and off, and surprisingly, it allows the person to view the home on the screen through the use of an IP camera. The interesting part is that this is done through a navigation system which is normally used as a device to understand the roads. But this, in contrast from traditional GPS systems, may serve as an inside-car multimedia center since it even includes a DVD player, a 7 inch Viera LCD screen, a mobile TV tuner, an I-Pod link, and the Bluetooth. In order to improve the image quality of the screen, Panasonic developed a high quality circuit with the high definition technology of plasma televisions. This GPS system is also unique with its excellent sound quality achieved through  the supervision from a group of recording engineers from MIXE’s Lab. The engineers of Panasonic are incredible by finding an efficient and hard way of connecting to the home through Bluetooth technology. According to the Japanese site of Panasonic, the car navigation first transfers the information to a Bluetooth enhanced mobile phone, and then the phone transfers it to the domotic system of the house.  This was all done through collaboration with all of the major Japanese phone operators such as AU, Softbank, and NTT Docomo. Since Japan was the first country to utilize the third generation technology of mobile phones, most of its mobile phone bands are wide range and this is the reason why the transfer of data was possible.  However, there is a low chance for this GPS to go to foreign countries since there is almost no other country in the world with a mobile phone system like Japan’s, so don’t expect this to appear in any of your countries.

In Japan, the company is planning to sell 8000 sets per month, but Panasonic official Naohisha Morimoto said, “The catch is you need a special Internet-linking home with its own server that hooks up gadgets and lighting to work with mobile phones and products like Strada F-Class. Only about 2,000 homes in Japan have such Net-linking systems so far.” This basically means that Panasonic is planning to increase these kinds of homes in the country and therefore, the plan was 8000 sets.

Panasonic is planning to introduce an in-dash type navigation system which is the CN-HX1000D (planned to be introduced at June 13) and a 2DIN type which is the CN-HW1000D(planned to be introduced at June20). The features included in these two navigation systems would be the same but will have different price tags. By having two different models, Panasonic is planning to accommodate many different kinds of car models since the models differ in the way of placement.

Format war: HD DVD and the Blue Ray Disc

Many people still remember the intense format war between the VHS and the Betamax that occurred during the 1970’s and 1980’s where JVC’s VHS successfully won. Sony, with losing market share formally accepted the defeat by having a contradicting introduction of a Sony VHS system. Recently, there was the same kind of format fight, but this time around, it happened between high definition discs. This fight was occurring between Toshiba’s HD DVD and Sony’s Blue-Ray Disc. In the beginning, the HD DVD had an advantage over the Blue-ray disc, but this trend started to decline after the introduction of the Play Station 3 that includes a blue-ray disc player. This was further intensified in February 2008, when Toshiba announced to the public that the production of HD-DVD players under Toshiba would stop by March 2008. This was officially the end to the format war between the HD DVD and the blue-ray disc. There are many reasons to this decline in the HD DVD where the blue ray had many advantages. One of the major advantages of the blue-ray disc was the higher capacity of storing data. During the recent format war, both sides were fighting to increase the capacity of the discs, but for initial engineering reasons, the HD DVD was easily defeated by the other format. Most blue-ray discs at the time were capable of keeping 50 GB of memory while the HD DVD was only 30 GB. Many third party electric companies also started to invest on the research of the discs to increase the capacity. During this time period, Toshiba introduced a 51 GB HD DVD prototype to compete with the 50 GB capacity of the blue-ray. However, many reviewers believed that this disc format would not go into production for technical problems. After this, as stated before, the third party developers started to introduce blue-ray disc formats in higher capacities. One of the most prominent ones was the 200 GB prototype of TDK. By having this, people were able to view the extensive capabilities of this type of disc format. About a year after this, Hitachi also created a high capacity blue-ray disc, dubbed at 100GB. According to the company, this new prototype, unlike the 51 GB HD DVD, is nearer to production, requiring only a few updates over current blue-ray discs. At this point, it is clear that the HD DVD format had a significantly lower capacity compared to the blue-ray discs. As stated before, the direction of the blue-ray discs completely changed after the PS3. This happened since the Play Station 3 had a cheap, high quality blue-ray disc player already installed. By knowing this, it is easy to assume that PS3 owners would buy blue-ray over the HD. For this reason, blue-ray sales gradually increased surpassing the sales of HD DVD’s. This introduction of the gaming console, as a result, led to a turning point to Sony’s format, creating a huge advantage over the HD DVD. At the end, Sony’s blue-ray disc format clearly defeated the HD-DVD, ending the format war in a similar way as the Betamax vs. VHS.

Hyundai Genesis: Revival of Hyundai’s Image

Hyundai Motor Company, known widely as the cheap low-quality vehicle manufacturer, is planning to release its first rear wheel drive V-8 powered luxury vehicle. As many of the people know, Hyundai has been experiencing an impeccable growth due to its increasing reliability and the helpful warranty system it has. As a result, Hyundai executives decided to surprise the public’s eyes by revealing the striving all-new concept automobile known as the Hyundai Genesis. According to Automobile Magazine, this vehicle was planned to imitate the example and success of Toyota’s luxury segment Lexus and to revive the poor image of the company. This is, however, hard to predict since other Japanese manufacturers have not experienced huge successes by introducing luxury vehicles in the United States. Examples would be luxury name plates such as the Acura (Honda) and Infiniti (Nissan), where none of them were successful enough to be called competitors of the traditional luxury brands from the European counterparts. This will be a hard game for Hyundai since the revival of the company’s image is close to impossible. All of this is based on price, like other traditional Hyundai vehicles. However, according to the press release of the company, the Genesis was engineered to compete with the BMW 5-series and the E Class of Mercedes Benz. This is possible since the Genesis possesses features that directly compete with those of German manufacturers.

As stated before, the Genesis has factors that allow them to compete with cars thousands of dollars higher. According to the press release, the torsional rigidity of Hyundai’s body in white manufactured body is 14 percent higher than the BMW 5-Series, and the interior space is higher than the E-Class and both the 5-Series and the 7-Series. Both of these are huge facts for the company since the Genesis starts below the 30,000 dollar mark while the German cars that were compared starts well higher than the 40,000 dollar mark. The Genesis also has a close to even weight distribution, revealed as 47/58 percent. There is also one boosting fact to the car. The 17 speaker Lexicon audio system of the Genesis is part of the only two vehicles that have a Lexicon audio system and this other vehicle is the $360,000 Rolls Royce Phantom. It is so incredible that Lexicon enthusiasts have a secondary choice that enables them to experience a Lexicon audio experience without paying the extreme luxury price of the Rolls Royce. This Lexicon inclusion is one confident fact of the Genesis that attracts customers wanting an audio experience of the Rolls Royce. This is not the ending to the Genesis. The Hyundai also has its home made 4.6 liter V-8 engine known as the Tau, which creates an impressive 365 horse power and a 324 lb. of torque. The Genesis also uses a 6 speed ZF Friedrichshafen automatic transmission usually found on luxury European vehicles. By having all of these high-end performance features, Hyundai claims that the Genesis runs from 0 to 60 mph in just below 6 seconds. Other than this, the Hyundai further strengthens its competitiveness by including high end accessory features such as adaptive xenon lights, Bluetooth technology, iPod and USB inputs, adaptive cruise control, an HD Radio receiver, an excellent eight airbag system, heated and cooled front seats, and a similar front dashboard to BMW’s iDrive. Apart from this, the Genesis has reflective leather on the steering wheel to prevent it from heating. All of these features certainly stress many current luxury makers, creating a competitive market.

In terms of exterior design, the Genesis is not as original and therefore, it highly resembles many German styling cues. Its front fascia has a dividing line, which is highly similar to Mercedes Benz’s traditional design. This is a reason why some people already dislike the designs of the Genesis. The rear end of the vehicle also resembles the European makers by trying to imitate the elegance of Mercedes Benz and BMW. With all of these imitating looks, the Genesis looks like a mixture of Lexus’s L Finesse styling, BMW’s sport look, and the elegance of Mercedes Benz. All of this would probably create complaints from these automobile makers thus creating a new image of a controversial maker.

As a vehicle designed to revive the company’s poor image, the 2009 Hyundai Genesis is something that may do the job. With all of the performance features and the high end options, the Genesis directly competes with expensive luxury vehicles from European manufacturers. However, the Genesis maintains a low price which allows the car to appeal to a larger range of customers. The controversial styling of the Hyundai is not a big problem for the company since price beats the customer’s mind. Also, the controversial image may be easily defeated with future releases of vehicles. At the end, this introduction of the luxury vehicle may finally catch the population’s attention, triggering a new positive era for the company.

Macbook Air

With its tiny form factor, it is not surprising to hear that the Macbook Air is currently the thinnest laptop in the market and the lightest 13 inch laptop in the industry. But to achieve this, Apple needed to sacrifice many of the essential equipments that people consider to be a basic requirement for everyday use. The computer itself lacks an Ethernet port and a security slot, which are only available through an external USB to Ethernet adapter. Apart from this, the Macbook Air only has one USB port, but with a smaller size than traditional ones. This means that some peripheral devices won’t work on this system, unless the user decides to buy and use an external USB hub. Without these ports, the user will need to carry more items and this adds weight to the overall carriage. By considering this, it is easy to think that there is no meaning to buy a computer like this if the overall weight increases. In this case, the Macbook Air is easily defeated by other small and light 13 inch laptops in the industry because of the lack of basic ports. However, like other Apple laptops, the computer maintains a minimalistic design that visually appeals to most of the consumers and by being lighter and smaller, it attracts huge amounts of people. This is an important factor to Apple because this is the only key of success of the laptop since it lacks many ports. Apart from this, the computer is in danger for its outdated and low-end features. This happened since the designers needed to sacrifice everything to create a small and light computer. The Macbook Air has a slow, but small Core 2 Duo processor that uses the old Merom technology of Intel, one of the first processor technologies of the mobile Core 2 technology. Since the Macbook Air was released near the beginnings of 2008, it has been criticized for not including the newer Penryn microchips, which improves overall performance of the computer because of the use of a 45 nanometer dual core. Also, Macbook Air’s processor reduces overall performance and increases heat by having a specially designed body that reduces the size. The heat problem is even worsened from the small size that reduces overall temperature management. Some people have already complained about the extreme heat of the computer that sometimes causes the processor to shut down. This problem is extremely serious because every time the chip shuts down the user would need to remake the work that was stopped. After this, Apple introduced a software update, but this couldn’t fulfill the people’s needs; therefore, reviewers gave the update unsatisfactory responses. The chip problem is not the only performance based conflict the Air has. This thin computer has an extremely slow hard drive with a reading speed of a mere 4200 rpm and a size of 80 gigabytes. Considering that the computer has a webcam like other line of Apple notebooks, 80 gigabytes is not a sufficient size to store videos and pictures. For example, if a person records 10 videos with 1 minute each, the user would lose 10 gigabytes of the hard drive. This is a huge amount since the preinstalled software would take about 10 gigabytes of the hard drive and the OS would take more memory from the computer. Because of these performance problems, the sacrifice of major components of a computer doesn’t satisfy the needs of a consumer regardless of the appearance. There is a higher chance that the buyer would choose to purchase other slim 13 inch notebook systems such as the Dell XPS m1330 and the CR series of Vaio that doesn’t throw away the essentials of a computer. Like the Dell XPS One (stated in the last post of “Competition to the iMac”), the Macbook Air is broken down into a small consumer range that are willing to give up performance over appearance. However, the buyer would need to sacrifice one other thing: price. The Macbook Air has a base price that starts around the 2000 dollars mark, which is over priced for a 13 inch laptop. Many other 13 inch laptops with higher configurations start under the 1000 dollar mark, meaning that these are better choices for most people. Nevertheless, the computer is still one of a kind and no other competitor offers a system like the Macbook Air. Even with this, the Macbook Air remains a hard choice for many, apparently showing the weaknesses of such laptop systems.

Competition to the iMac

It may seem surprising to many people, but the all-in-one Apple computer is starting to be imitated from major PC manufacturers such as Dell and Gateway to compete with this loved company. To me, it seems quite late for these makers to realize the likes of the iMac and the extreme versatility of such desktop computers. By simply thinking this, I went to the wrong direction and thought that these were doing a not-so-good job. But recently, after browsing a bit, I was astonished from the grand results from these PC makers. Even with this, you may think that the usual PC makers are creating the traditional PC’s with nothing special. However, these usual PC makers contradicted the thoughts of many consumers by introducing stylish and eye catching computers with excellent performance. For example, Dell, with its recent successful launch of the well designed XPS M1330, surprised many when they revealed their impeccable one piece desktop named the Dell XPS One. It is the most common thought that nothing could surpass the family based, friendly looking iMac. However, this one is something that can get near to the standards of iMac. At first glance, the computer is unique in almost all aspects. It even has a Blue Ray player and burner in the computer, a keyboard with a touch pad, a discrete graphics card, and a glossy 20 inch screen. It creates more competition to the iMac by including the Adobe Elements Studio, which competes decently with Apple’s user-friendly iLife. Currently, the XPS One is the only computer in the market with such unique specifications. However, even with its splendid specifications, most people wouldn’t consider having a blue ray disc drive and the touch pad. This would lower the consumer range for buyers who want a one piece computer that includes a blue ray disc drive. This number is extremely low, creating less competition with Apple. However, the computer is still stealing away a portion of the iMac customers and also, by considering the growing popularity of the High Definition discs, the XPS One could become the next generation of these types of computers. This could be further supported if the Dell all-in-one bumps their screen size to 22 inch or above with the movie suited 1080p definition. Currently, the Dell only has a 1680 x 1050 definition, which is not sufficient enough to achieve the entering of the home theater media center desktop category. After looking at this, it is possible that the Apple faculty decides to introduce blue rays or other HD players in their computers, but it will be too late for them since Dell would have already dominated the sector. It is simply a matter of who develops and introduces the product first; that is why the iMac is currently babbling about their huge popularity. By introducing it before, the company would have all their time they desire to improve the product. But it is possible that their popularity will decline as the time goes on because if the XPS One reaches the reliability of Mac systems and gains excellent software, the Dell would acquire a huge number of customers.

On the other hand, America’s cow icon computer manufacturer doesn’t seem to have a bright future as Dell’s. But Gateway still introduced the computer early enough to attract customers and get advantage from the growing popularity of the one piece computers. Their computers have less unique features, resembling the iMac in many aspects. Apart from the features, the computer has an obvious name like Dell’s called Gateway One. By having this, the system is able to emphasize the fact that the computer is an all-in-one. However, as stated before, the Gateway One highly resembles the Mac, and therefore, it is often referred to as the clone of Mac. Apart from this, the Gateway includes as standard equipment a 19 inch screen with a 1.3 megapixel camera and by having this camera, the Gateway can compete with iMac even with the excellent software the Apple possesses.

With a price starting around the 1300 dollars, the Gateay One easily beats the high end price of Dell XPS One. However, the iMac has a price around the 1200 dollars, making it a better buy for people who are low in budget. This will create serious problems for Gateway since the iMac has better specifications. The base model of the Gateway One has a 1.5 ghz Core 2 Duo processor and the low end Intel Media Accelerator X1300, while the iMac has a 2.0 ghz processor and an ATI graphics card. The Apple even has a 20 inch monitor which is larger than Gateway’s. However, the Gateway has the ability of being customized, easily overpowering other all-in-ones in which parts cannot be changed. This is an excellent feature since the customer can improve the computer’s performance preventing the extreme stress buyers face when parts are not exchangeable. As shown, most of Gateway’s features are easily eaten away with the unbelievable equipments of the iMac. In order to compete with the iMac in a direct way, Gateway will need to pass through an intense stage of improvement.

If for some reason, people don’t find the value of the all-in-one computers, they could still buy traditional desktop computers. Buying the computers from this sector is an indirect way of competing in which manufacturers benefit. These types of computers are others that are being considered by many customers, regardless of the appearance. However, some of these have nice touches that allow the machine to have a miniature casing with all of the necessary features. The world’s largest PC maker is doing an excellent job on the creation of small desktops with convincible prices. HP’s Pavilion Slimline s3200 is the one of them that is making the benefitting job for the company. Rated “Excellent” in the renowned computer reviewer CNet, this is one of the best buys in the computer industry. With a starting price below the 1000 dollar line, it is splendid that the computer has gaming computer rivals like Alienware and the Dell XPS line of computers. These gaming computers have prices that range from the 1000 dollars to the 10000 dollar line. Why is it possible for a cheap computer to compete in this way? The answer to this is the intense price reducing techniques used by HP that allows the price to be lower than the competition. Also, apart from the value, the computer catches the attention of the people with its attractive design. The computer has a black glossy looking cover and a miniature size measuring 27.6 inches high and 10.7 inches wide. This is something to put an eye into it since it attracts customers that are in love with Macs but are laid off from the high prices of them. This is one of the best value computers in the industry, making it an excellent choice for performance lovers and budget-low customers.

The Apple iMac is still the king of the compact desktop systems with its excellent configurations versus price. However, Dell and Gateway recently released their own all-in-one systems. Dell, especially, is trying hard to compete with the iMac to steal the customers away, but the XPS One is still inferior to the Apple. On the other hand, HP is doing an impeccable job, showing formidable signs of competition with the Apple. If time goes on, there is a possibility of seeing an intense competition industry with the compact computers and all-in-one systems.

Nissan GTR

As the successor of the legendary Skyline GTR, the Nissan GTR was able to create a strong anticipation before its official debut in a motor show. The Nissan Skyline GTR was a critically acclaimed vehicle that had a similar handling experience to the Ferrari Testarrosa and the Porsche 991, but with a significantly lower price tag. Even the protagonist of the Fast and Furious bought the Skyline GTR (in Japan) after driving it in the movie filming. However, in that time, the vehicle was only sold in Japan and other select places and not in the United States. This was the reason people couldn’t buy this incredible vehicle in the United States. But during the introduction of the vehicle in the 2006 Tokyo Motor Show, it was revealed that this time, the successor to the Skyline GTR would be sold in more places, including the United States. In this show, the people were able to view the power of this new car and understand its new specifications. These specifications of the vehicle are so amazing that most of the current vehicles cannot compete against it for its blend of performance and price. After many months, the vehicle was introduced to the general public in Japan at the end of 2007. It is said that the American version of the GTR is going to be introduced in June of 2008.

This powerful vehicle has a base price near the 70,000 dollars, which is quite low for its high specifications. The car boasts an All Wheel Drive system and a 50/50 weight distribution, creating balance in the car. The new high end Bridgestone Potenza RE tires adds excellent grip to the vehicle and its use of nitrogen in the tires adds stability to the vehicle when used in rapid speeds. Even with all of these positive aspects, the car’s performance may become lower because of its bulky 3800 pound weight. However, surprisingly, the GTR reaches 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and the 121 mph mark at 11.6 seconds. If compared, the launches were higher than the expensive Porsche 911 which ran from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. By looking at this, it is clear that the vehicle has excellent performance that is comparable to the European makers while mantaining a low price. But there is one major option flaw into this vehicle: the lack of a manual transmission option. Many supercar owners still prefer the old but controllable manual transmission that allows the driver to experience a better drive. The car only has an automated manual transmission, but none that represents a completely manual transmission. Other than this, the car has excellent performance equipment. This car includes as standard equipment the high end Brembo brakes with 15 inch rotors while also including six piston calibers at the front brakes and four piston calibers in the back.

In terms of exterior design, the car may seem something that is not as attractive. However, with its excellent specs, this is something that people could get through. Supposedly, according to Hiroshi Hasegawa (Chief Designer of the car), the GTR is designed to resemble the Japanese culture. Hasegawa tried to design something unique that will show that the vehicle is completely from Japan and not like others, that has designs that are influenced from the European styles. This supercar has clear influences from the Japanese “manga” Gundam by having the box style design and the unique front fascia. Credit could also be given to its excellent aerodynamics with its high speed down force at both ends of the car and the incredible drag coefficient of 0.27. For information, drag coefficient is a measure that shows the amount of “aerodynamic drag caused by fluid flow”.

The Nissan GTR’s interior is driver based with all of the main features located near the driver’s seat. The center console is located high with a slight tilt towards the driver’s seat. The steering wheel of the vehicle has a special GTR label on the center and has control buttons on it. The car also includes excellent technology features such as a customizable monitor that measures the car’s performance, a hard drive navigation system, and the option of an 11 speaker Bose sound system. The car is also incredible for its inclusion of a second row of seats, allowing the vehicle to be a 4 seat vehicle. However, the back row seems to be too small for a fully grown adult and thereby suits only the little ones. Apart from this, the seats are made out of high quality leather, allowing the vehicle to have a touch of luxury. The Nissan GTR also includes as standard equipment a safety system with front side airbags, roof mounted air bags, stability controls, and traction controls.

As one of the most anticipated vehicles in the United States and its excellent value, it is clear that the GTR is the next generation of Nissan’s image. The car has excellent performance that matches many European cars that have prices that are thousands of dollars higher. Even with its few minor flaws, this vehicle could become an excellent showcase for the automotive industry and the delight of the supercar lovers.

BMW Hydrogen 7

Everybody has heard of the luxury of BMW and other famous makers like Audi and Mercedes-Benz. But many of the cars in this luxury lineup have huge and powerful engines that destroy our environment. In this case, their problems will be further intensified from the higher oil prices and the low numbers of oil reserves in the future. It is said that there are only 40 years of oil production left (according to USA Today news paper in 2004) since the amount of this source is going down in a rapid pace. For this reason, car manufacturers with vehicles that consume high amounts of oil would fail in the future if the companies continue in the same way. In response, the reputable German auto maker BMW decided to introduce the technology of hydrogen energy in the 7 series, the flagship line of automobiles in the company.

From this, the Hydrogen 7 was produced involving many new technologies. According to BMW, the Hydrogen 7 was the “world’s first production-ready hydrogen vehicle.” The car boasts an internal combustion engine (ICE) with a double engine that allows the driver to switch between a more traditional gasoline fuel from a hydrogen fuel. When the automobile is in hydrogen mode, the car could drive distances up to125 miles which is sufficient enough for many cases. Even more incredible is the fact that this car rates “well-below super-ultra low emission vehicle standards.” According to Science Daily news website, the car actually cleans the air by burning harmful gases in our atmosphere. This is possible since the car uses a more conventional engine that uses ICE, while other hydrogen vehicles in testing uses FCEV, which is a type of engine that has no burning in the process. By simply hearing that the car uses burning, people will assume and question the truth of this research. However, the burning of hydrogen only creates water vapor, which certainly does not harm the environment. After the car test was taken, one of the mechanical engineers involved in the testing commented, “The BMW Hydrogen 7’s emissions were only a fraction of SULEV level, making it one of the lowest emitting combustion engine vehicles that have been manufactured.” In my opinion this will be a great help on alleviating our environmental problems if people start to buy it. Sadly, BMW is currently not planning to mass produce the vehicle and are only intending to sell it to some famous and privileged people. Currently, there are only about 100 of these magnificent cars that are produced.

Even with these positive aspects, the car still has some negativities. One of the negative things is the refilling problem. Currently, there are only 5 hydrogen refilling stations managed by BMW in the world. Owners would find the refilling of the vehicle’s hydrogen as something that is highly difficult. Apart from this, if the car heat gets too high, the hydrogen will start to vaporize. This happens since the hydrogen needs to be super cooled to be in a liquid state. If all the hydrogen evaporates, there is no meaning on having a hydrogen powered automobile. This car also faces price problems since it uses technological equipments that have high production costs. It is said that if the car goes on sale for the general public, the price will be significantly higher than the other cars in their current lineup, becoming the most expensive car in BMW.

In conclusion, BMW’s Hydrogen 7 has many positive aspects, such as a bivalent engine and the ability to clean the air, but still has some negativity. However if all the unwanted aspects of the car are corrected, the vehicle will become something that people will desire and will turn into a revolutionary vehicle.

Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech, in my opinion, is the basic human right every being has that allows them to express and speak freely without “censorship”. This law is protected by international declarations as well as constitutions. Under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, created by the United Nations, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” In this case, we are allowed to express ourselves in any way possible. In the creation of the United States Constitution, the Founding Fathers were intending to allow this type of freedom to allow the people to regulate the government. They wanted the government to become something that is ideal and perfect. This can only be done through freedom of speech since by using this way, the government can understand the incorrect ideas that the citizens think. An example of this was the I Have a Dream speech of Martin Luther King, in which it completely changed the lives of many Americans. This was an action that helped regulate the racism in the US, changing the way the government acts. This was the complete representation of what the creators of the constitution were intending to do by adding the right of freedom of speech. However, from the introduction of the internet, people took advantage of it and started to insult other cultures, religions, and races. By writing these kinds of writings, the person that wrote it may face outside consequences from it. For example, in the case of Edublogs, the website may delete and erase the blog site because of an unwanted type of writing. This is possible since Edublogs is a private institution. There are also other ways in which unwanted information is filtered through internet. In this case, China would be an excellent example. The Chinese government has created an intense censorship program that erases the information that is not wanted through internet. There are also organizations that are dedicated to this type of censorship. All of these regulatory actions violate the rights of freedom of speech, but are possible since the right has many restrictions to it. These restrictions are created since the freedom of speech is a cause of many controversial and unwanted actions. For this reason, the writing of these insulting works is not a good idea since it results on consequences. In this case, this is an important warning to bloggers. By writing something that is insulting or uses disruptive words, people may take away the blog site.

As shown in the regulation in internet, there are some restrictions to the right of freedom of speech. This was proven in Braenburg v. Ohio, a United States Supreme Court decision, that clarified that freedom of speech may be restricted if it may cause “imminent lawless action.” Imminent lawless action is something that is not protected under the first amendment of the constitution and is defined as something that is “likely to cause violation of the law more quickly than an officer of the law reasonably can be summoned”. As you can see, there are some regulations to the right of freedom of speech. There are many other restrictions to the freedom of speech to keep balance and to protect the rights of other citizens such as regulations to threats, hate speeches, and speeches containing copyright infringement.

Freedom of speech in general, is a concept describing that every human being has the right to express themselves freely. But this expression has some exceptions since the incorrect use of it may cause damage to other rights people have. For this reason, bloggers should not think that the internet is a hideaway that no one is watching and punishing. There are some consquences that comes from the misuse of our right of freedom of speech. Therefore, we should constantly caution ourselves to not post something that may be considered by others as something inappropiate. The action of doing this, as stated before violates other rights of people and for this reason, this cannot be done.
